The reason Jesus rebuked Martha was not because she was focused on serving the meal; rather, the problem was that she was trying to earn Jesus’s love through her actions and became caught in the trap of comparison. Her eyes were not on Jesus but on her sister.
All too often, we fall into the same trap that Martha did. We might find ourselves in the presence of Jesus and yet still anxious, worried, and distracted. We might become jealous of those who seem closer to God than we are. But the truth is that God doesn’t play favorites. The Lord invites each and every one of us to sit at his feet, but sometimes we ignore the invitation.
